This Saturday, February 1, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. a good 30 teams will compete by manoeuvring their canoes on the ice and through the frozen waters of the St. Lawrence River.
Held every year since 2014, this extreme sporting challenge features canoes navigating between the river’s moving ice floes.
The race starts and finishes at the Clock Tower basin. Teams will complete several laps of a circuit around Alexandra Basin, Bickerdike Pier and Île Sainte-Hélène, before heading up the strong Sainte-Marie current to finish just off the Clock Tower.
There are several great observation points to be front-line spectators of the event. Here are four suggested locations:
- Clock Tower Quay in the Old Port
- At the end of Saint-Pierre Street by the river
- Dieppe Park on Cité du Havre
- The river shuttle dock on Île-Sainte-Hélène in Jean-Drapeau Park
The MPA s a proud sponsor of this spectacular annual event on the river. For more information: https://www.oldportofmontreal.com/event/ice-canoe-challenge
